Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin tragopān.
Etymology: < classical Latin tragopān, the name of a bird thought to be found in Ethiopia (perhaps the bearded vulture) (Pliny), adopted in scientific Latin as a genus name ( Cuvier Le règne animal (1829) 479) < ancient Greek τράγος he-goat (see tragus n.) + Πάν Pan n.3 Compare French tragopan , denoting the Asian pheasant (1780), and also Middle French, French †tragopanas , denoting the Ethiopian bird (1562 in Du Pinet's translation of Pliny; compare quot. 1601).Compare earlier †tragopanas (early 18th cent. or earlier; probably < French †tragopanas), denoting the Ethiopian bird:1706 Phillips's New World of Words (new ed.) Tragopanas, a Bird in Ethiopia, that is larger than an Eagle, and has Horns like a Goat.Compare also earlier †tragopanade (and variants), which derives from a former reading in Pliny ( Nat. Any of several short-tailed Asian pheasants constituting the genus Tragopan, the males of which have a pair of erectile fleshy horns on the head and colourful bare skin on the face and throat. Also called horned pheasant.
