Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin tragicomoedia.
Etymology: < tragi- (in post-classical Latin tragicomoedia tragicomedy n.). Compare tragic adj.Attested earliest in the second half of the 16th cent. in tragicomical adj., and subsequently in the late 16th cent. in the borrowing tragicomedy n. Compare Italian tragi- (formations in which are found from at least the late 16th cent., e.g. tragicomico tragicomic adj.).
1. Forming nouns with the sense ‘tragedy and ——’ or ‘tragic ——’, as tragi-catastrophe, tragi-drama, tragi-farce, tragi-romance, etc. See also tragicomedy n., tragi-comedietta n.
