1. Chiefly Law and in legal contexts. The action or fact of obstructing, challenging, or disputing something (cf. traverse v. I.); an instance of this. In later use: spec. the action or an act of referring a legal case for later consideration; postponement (cf. traverse v. 1c, traverse n. 2b). Now rare (chiefly Canadian).
