Origin: Formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: trans- prefix, limit n., -ation suffix.
Etymology: < trans- prefix + limit n. (compare sense 2a at that entry) + -ation suffix.Compare French translimitation (1837 or earlier), Spanish translimitación (1845 or earlier), both ultimately < English (the Spanish noun via French). According to contemporary newspaper reports (compare quot. 1837) this word was coined by Lord Palmerston in March 1836 (when trying to encourage the French to join with Britain and intervene in the First Carlist War by occupying certain strategic points in Spain); however, earlier documentation has not been found.1837 Times 31 Jan. 4/6 Lord Palmerston did not call this ‘intervention’ or ‘co-operation’; but, according to M. Thiers, his Lordship invented a new name for his very extraordinary scheme... This new word..turned out to be ‘translimitation’.
Obsolete. rare.
The sending of troops across the frontier of a foreign state, for the purpose of intervening in civil war. Apparently used only with reference to proposed military intervention by Britain and France in Spain during the First Carlist War of 1833–40.
