A signalling device on each side of a motor vehicle, in the form of a small, typically illuminated pointer which can be extended to indicate an intended change in direction. Occasionally (now rarely) applied to other types of indicator (see indicator n. 3g). Cf. traffic indicator n. (b) at traffic n. Compounds 2.Signalling devices of this type were superseded by flashing indicator lights in the mid 20th cent.; their use is now restricted to (some) vintage vehicles.
