Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin traductor.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin traductor person who takes something to another place (13th cent. in a British source), translator (a1444; already in classical Latin (as trāductor ) denoting a person who transfers someone from one status to another) < classical Latin trāduct- , past participial stem of trāducere traduce v. + -or -or suffix. Compare French traducteur (1540 in Middle French), Catalan traductor (1653), Spanish traductor (1611 as tradutor ), Portuguese tradutor (1721), Italian traduttore (a1565), all in sense ‘translator’. Compare earlier traduct v. Compare also earlier traducer n. 2.In sense 1 in later use apparently sometimes after a Romance model.
