Origin: Apparently either (i) a borrowing from French. Or (ii) a borrowing from Latin. Etymons: French traditif; Latin traditivus.
Etymology: Apparently < (i) French traditif (although this is first attested slightly later) that transmits (1611 in Cotgrave), traditional (1612; earlier in Middle French as feminine noun traditive oral tradition (a1442)), or its etymon (ii) post-classical Latin traditivus that hands over or passes on (from 13th cent. in British sources) < classical Latin trādit- , past participial stem of trādere to hand over, deliver (see tradit v.) + -īvus -ive suffix.
1. Characterized by, belonging to, or transmitted by tradition; traditional. Now rare.
