Etymology: < French tourbillon whirlwind, in Old French torbeillon (12th cent. in Hatzfeld & Darmesteter), torbillon, apparently, from the sense, an irregular derivative of Latin turbo, -inem ‘whirlwind’; though the form seems to connect it with vulgar Latin turbēla, turbella ‘bustle, stir’, derivative of turba crowd. See Hatzfeld & Darmesteter, Littré, and Scheler.
