Etymology: Japanese, < tori bird, fowl + i to sit, perch.
A ceremonial gateway in front of a Japanese Shinto shrine, consisting of two uprights and two crosspieces of which the lower is straight and the upper usually curved and projecting. Also attributive.Occasionally erroneously interpreted as plural.
