Etymology: < scientific Latin Trachodon, former genus name (J. Leidy 1856, in Proc. Acad. Nat. Sci. Philadelphia 8 72) < ancient Greek τραχύς rough (see trachy- comb. form) + scientific Latin -odon -odon comb. form.

Palaeontology. Now chiefly historical.

A group of duck-billed dinosaurs or hadrosaurs; (also trachodon) a dinosaur of this group.The group was formerly treated as a genus, but the concept was based on doubtful fossil evidence and is no longer in technical use; it still appears as a genus in non-technical contexts.
