A type of stitch used on the outside of a garment or other sewn item, typically along the edges or seams, being either functional (e.g. to reinforce a seam) or for decorative effect. Also (usually in plural): an individual stitch of this kind.In quot. 1895 in tinsel embroidery (tinsel-embroidery n.): any of a number of stitches which secure the wire used to create the design.
