Etymology: < breathing n. + mark n.¹In sense 1 after the corresponding post-classical Latin specific use of classical Latin spiritus spirit n. or its model, the corresponding Hellenistic Greek specific use of ancient Greek πνεῦμα pneuma n.; compare earlier breathing n. 9.
