Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymons: French touché, toucher.
Etymology: < French touché (1843 or earlier in a fencing context), use as interjection of past participle of toucher to hit (see touch v.).In modern fencing, a hit is adjudicated or acknowledged by touche! (1823 or earlier in French in this sense), use as interjection of touche touch n. Compare the following examples of this French interjection in an English fencing context:1823 J. Neal Seventy-six I. xiv. 260 ‘Ah, a hit!’ said the tall stranger. Du Coudray shrugged his shoulders—‘oui, touche!’1861 New Monthly Mag. Feb. 152 From the inner room there came the rapid clash of small swords, while ‘Touche, touche, touche! riposte! hola!’ was shouted. In form touchée (compare quot. 1952 at sense 2) after the French feminine form, due to the exclamation being made by a woman.
