Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: topo- comb. form, -philia comb. form.
Etymology: < topo- comb. form + -philia comb. form.Apparently coined by W. H. Auden (see quot. 1947), and subsequently popularized by the Chinese-American geographer Yi-Fu Tuan in his essay and book Topophilia (1961 and 1974 respectively). Compare French topophilie (1958 in Gaston Bachelard’s La Poétique de l'Espace, translated into English in 1964).
Love of, or emotional connection to, a particular place or physical environment.
