Etymology: < town n. + -ly suffix1.Apparently re-formed in the 16th cent. With later use compare townish adj. and townlike adj. at town n. Derivatives. Old English tūnlic in quot. OE reflects the traditional explanation (already found in ancient authors) that ancient Greek κωμῳδία ( > classical Latin cōmoedia ) derives from κώμη village (see comedy n.1); compare also Middle English town song (one isolated attestation, also glossing cōmoedia : see quot. a1425 at town n. Compounds 1a(a)(i)).
