a. Originally: dittander, Lepidium latifolium, a plant of the family Brassicaceae ( Cruciferae) formerly gathered and sometimes cultivated for its pungent leaves and root (later more fully broad-leaved pepperwort). In later use (chiefly with distinguishing word): any of various small plants constituting the genus Lepidium, which have dense racemes of small white-petalled (or sometimes apetalous) flowers and a hot pungent taste; esp. (more fully field pepperwort) L. campestre, a Eurasian plant of arable fields and banks.In quot. a1500 perhaps: dittany of Crete, Origanum dictamnus.
