Etymology: Middle English tosen (a1250 in compound to-tosen ); not recorded in Old English; but the later forms toase , etc. indicate an Old English *tásian , < verbal root tás- < Old Germanic tais- , whence also Old English tǽsan ( < *taisjan ) to tease v.1 (see for further relations).
Obsolete exc. dialect.
a. transitive. To pull asunder; to separate or unravel the fibres of; to comb or card (wool, etc.); = tease v.1 1.

Forms: Also 1800s toas (nonstandard toss).
Etymology: Possibly the same word as toze v.1; but connection of sense is not certain. (The spelling toss seems due to a bad etymological guess (see quot. 1839 at main sense) which has passed into dictionaries.)
Tin-mining.
transitive. To separate tin ore from the gangue or rough ore by stirring the slimes in a kieve, and allowing the heavier particles to settle.
