a. A crystalline base, C₇H₇(NH₂), produced by the action of sulphuric acid on nitrotoluene, solidifying in snow-white crystals, which gradually turn brown on contact with the air: the source of numerous compounds, e.g. ˌazotoˈluidine, ˌphenyltoˈluidine, etc. Also called aˌmidoˈtoluene, and formerly toluylia.
