Origin: From a proper name. Etymon: proper name Todd AO.
Etymology: < the name of the Todd AO Corporation (see note) < the name of Michael Todd (born Avrom Hirsch Goldbogen, ?1907–58), U.S. stage and film producer, who developed the process + the initials of the name of the American Optical Company, who designed and supplied the optical equipment.The Todd AO Corporation was founded c1953 by the Magna Theatre Corporation, co-owned by Todd, and the American Optical Company; the process was first used commercially in the film Oklahoma! (1955).
Cinematography. Now historical.
A proprietary name for: a cinematic process for producing a widescreen image using a single camera and wide-format film. Usually attributive.Prior to the development of the Todd-AO process, three cameras had been necessary (cf. Cinerama n.).
