Etymology: < the male forename Tommy (see Tommy n.1) + the surname Atkins, after Thomas Atkins n.The following is from a supposed letter of 1743, quoted in a 1938 note in the Spectator citing (untraced) recent correspondence in the Daily Telegraph, and widely cited by other commentators since, but which it has been impossible to verify:1743 Let. in Spectator 3 June (1938) 1015/1 Except for those from N. America (mostly Irish Papists) ye Marines and Tommy Atkins behaved splendidly.
(A generic name for) a British private soldier; British private soldiers collectively. Also occasionally in extended use: a private in any army; a member of the rank and file in any organization. Cf. Thomas Atkins n.In later use largely replaced by Tommy (Tommy n.1 3). Now chiefly with reference to the First World War (1914–18).
