单词 tomice
释义

tomicen.

Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin tomice.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin tomice (1504 or earlier), probably < an unattested Greek form showing an ablaut variant (o -grade) of the base of ancient Greek τέμνειν to cut (see -tomy comb. form) + -ice (in e.g. classical Latin plasticē plastic n.).Post-classical Latin tomice is apparently first attested in Pomponio Gaurico De Sculptura (1504). He uses a number of technical terms derived from Greek, including plastice plastic n., proplastice proplastic n., and paradigmatice (see paradigmatic adj.). A Greek adjective τομικός ‘that cuts’ (compare -ic suffix) is not attested. N.E.D. (1913) gives the pronunciation as (tǫ·misī, -kī) /ˈtɒmɪsiː/, /-kiː/.
Obsolete. rare.
The art of carving in wood or ivory.Probably never used in English except in glossaries.
