Etymology: < post-classical Latin tomentosus tomentose adj.; compare -ous suffix.
Chiefly Botany. Now somewhat rare.
Closely covered with down or short fine hairs; pubescent, downy. Also: †having a flocculent, downy, or felted appearance (obsolete). Cf. tomentose adj.
