Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from French. Partly a borrowing from Italian. Etymons: French tombola; Italian tombola.
Etymology: < (i) French tombola kind of raffle or lottery (1835), and its etymon (ii) Italian tombola (1779) < tombolare to turn a somersault, fall upside down, tumble (15th cent.), extended (infixed) variant of tombare to fall, to tumble (13th cent.: see tumble v.).The sense ‘container from which tickets are drawn in this game’ appears to have arisen within English.
Originally and chiefly British.
A kind of raffle or lottery in which numbered tickets are drawn at random, a player winning a prize if the ticket he or she draws corresponds to one pre-assigned to that prize. Also: the container from which tickets are drawn in this game, now typically a revolving drum or barrel.Tombolas are typically played at fêtes or fairs, often to raise money for charity.
