Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a word inherited from Germanic. Partly formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: bright adj., -ly suffix2.
Etymology: Originally cognate with or formed similarly to Old Saxon berhtlīko , Old Icelandic bjartliga < the Germanic base of bright adj. + the Germanic base of -ly suffix2. In later use also partly directly < bright adj. + -ly suffix2. Compare bright adv.Compare the corresponding adjective Old English beorhtlic (early Middle English brihtlic ), Old Saxon berhtlīk bright (compare -ly suffix1).
