Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin acicula.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin acicula, literally ‘small pin’ (5th cent. denoting a plant, wild chervil), alteration or variant of acucula (5th cent. denoting an ornamental pin) < classical Latin acus needle ( < a variant (u-stem) of the same Indo-European base as classical Latin aciēs : see acies n.) + -cula -cula suffix. Compare earlier acicular adj.The forms aciculus and aciculum show remodelling after the Latin masculine and neuter endings respectively. In form aciculum apparently only in zoological use.
Chiefly Zoology and Botany.
A slender spine, prickle, or other needle-like structure; (in polychaete annelids) a chitinous rod forming an internal support for a parapodium.
