Etymology: Apparently originally < the male forename Tom (see Tom n.1) + the genitive of tickler n.1 + ground n. The motivation for the second element is not entirely clear. It shows considerable variation or alteration: with the β. forms compare tiddler n.2 and perhaps also tiddler n.1; with the γ. forms compare tittler n.2 and perhaps also tittler n.1; with the δ. forms compare tinker n.1In forms with first element Tommy showing alteration of Tom after the pet form Tommy (see Tommy n.1).
