单词 tom collins
释义

Tom Collinsn.

Brit. /ˌtɒm ˈkɒlᵻnz/, U.S. /ˌtɑm ˈkɑlənz/
Forms: also with lower-case initials.
Origin: From proper names. Etymons: proper name Tom, Collins.
Etymology: < the male forename Tom (see Tom n.1) + the surname Collins, probably as an alteration of John Collins n. at John n. Compounds 1b. Compare earlier Collins n.1 and see discussion at that entry. The semantic motivation for the change of the male forename is unclear. Although it has been suggested that the cocktail was so named because it was made with gin (compare Old Tom n. at old adj. Compounds 4), and an 1869 recipe for a John Collins does indeed call for Old Tom gin, quot. 1876 also refers to versions made with brandy or whisky, relegating the version with gin to last in the list. It is possible that the change of name may reflect an association with the so-called ‘Tom Collins hoax’, a practical joke whose popularity swept many U.S. cities in 1874; in this, the perpetrator of the hoax asks the listener whether he or she has seen a (non-existent) Tom Collins (who is allegedly talking about them nearby), with the intention of agitating them to the extent that they rush off to find him. See further Comments on Etymol. (1999) 28 vii. 6–10.
Originally U.S.
Originally: any of various cocktails consisting of a spirit mixed with lemon or lime juice, sugar or syrup, soda water, and ice, served in a tall glass. Later: a cocktail of this sort made with gin, sometimes specifically Old Tom gin. Cf. Collins n.1, John Collins n. at John n. Compounds 1b.In early use frequently with following modifying word specifying the type of spirit used.
