Origin: A borrowing from Greek, combined with an English element. Etymons: Greek τόμος , -graph comb. form.
Etymology: < ancient Greek τόμος slice, section (see tome n.) + -graph comb. form. In sense 1 (denoting the apparatus) probably after German Tomograph (1934 or earlier). Compare tomography n. and (with sense 2) slightly later tomogram n.
1. A device or machine used for making tomographic images of the internal structure of something, typically operating by means of one or more sensors which can detect and record the passage of electromagnetic waves, electrons, etc., through the object from multiple angles.
