单词 -istic
释义

-isticsuffix

Primary stress is attracted to the first syllable of this suffix and vowels may be reduced accordingly.
Etymology: corresponding to French -istique , Latin -isticus , Greek -ιστικός , viz. the suffix -ικός , -ic suffix, added to nouns in -ιστής , -ist suffix; e.g. σοϕιστικός of, pertaining to, or like a sophist, sophistic; but also used where there is a verb in -ίζειν (-ize suffix), or noun in -ισμός (-ism suffix), and no noun in -ιστής, as in χαρακτηριστικός characteristic. Not frequent in Greek; but more numerous in medieval Latin and modern languages.
Forming adjectives and nouns; supplying a derivative adjective to many nouns in -ist: e.g. altruistic, antagonistic, atheistic, Calvinistic, deistic, egotistic, evangelistic, Hellenistic, idealistic, realistic, socialistic, etc. In many cases the adjective serves also to express the quality of the noun in -ism, e.g. atheistic, of or pertaining to an atheist, or to atheism; hence it may be found in cases where a noun in -ism, but none in -ist, is in use. It is rarely found with the nouns in -ist suffix in groups 2, 4, 4 b, or with those formed from proper names in 3.
Words in -istic are essentially adjectival, but like other adjectives in -ic suffix, they are sometimes used as nouns. Like other adjectives in -ic also, they sometimes have a secondary form in -istical suffix, and on this type their adverbs are formed in -istically, as Calvinistically, characteristically, Hellenistically, sophistically. Some words in -istic originate verbs in -isticate, e.g. sophisticate.
