释义 | -isonsuffix suffix of nouns, representing. Old French -aison, -eison, -eson, -ison:—Latin -ātiōn-em (at a later date adopted in the learned form -ation, which is thus a doublet of -ison), -etiōnem, -itiōnem. Examples comparison, fermison, garrison, jettison, orison, venison, warnison. Benison and malison represent Old French beneīçon (later benisson) and maleïçon, from Latin bene-, maledictionem. Caparison is only attracted into this class. In reason and season, the suffix has, under the stress, retained a different form; so in treason:—Old French traïsun:—Latin tradition-em. See also inheriteson n. All these, with poison (:—Latin pōtiōnem), etc., are really particular cases of a suffix -son for Latin -tiōnem.
