单词 bridge house
释义

bridge housen.

Brit. /ˈbrɪdʒ haʊs/, U.S. /ˈbrɪdʒ ˌ(h)aʊs/
Forms: see bridge n.1 and house n.1
Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: bridge n.1, house n.1
Etymology: < bridge n.1 + house n.1 Compare Middle Low German brüggehūs house on or by a bridge, bridgemaster's house. The earlier place name Brighuses, West Riding, Yorkshire (1240; 1309 as Briggehouse, now Brighouse) refers to a small settlement by a bridge, not to a bridge house in the later senses. Compare ( < northern Middle English) Anglo-Norman brighouse (a1334 in an apparently isolated document with reference to Berwick); this could alternatively show a place name.
Now chiefly historical.
