单词 aesculapius
释义

Aesculapiusn.

Brit. /ˌiːskjᵿˈleɪpɪəs/, U.S. /ˌɛskəˈleɪpiəs/
Forms: 1500s– Esculapius, 1600s– Aesculapius.
Origin: Partly from a proper name. Partly also a borrowing from French. Etymons: proper name Aesculapius; French Esculapius.
Etymology: < Aesculapius (classical Latin Aesculāpius , ancient Greek Ἀσκληπιός : see note), the name of the Greek and Roman god of medicine, son of Apollo and Coronis. In quot. 1586 at sense 1 via Middle French Esculapius (1584 in the passage translated; compare French esculape (a1673 in Molière, 1762 in the passage translated in quot. 1798 at sense 1; subsequently from 1870)).The Latin form Aesculāpius appears to have developed from the Greek form Ἀσκληπιός via intermediate forms such as ancient Greek Αἰσχλαβιός (in an inscription from Etruria), showing an initial diphthong, and classical Latin Aiscolapio, showing insertion of a vowel. The name of the Greek and Roman god is attested in English contexts from the Old English period onwards in various forms (e.g. Old English Esculapius, Escolapius, Escolafius, Middle English Esculapius, Esculapfius, Esculapion, Esculape).
