单词 britisher
释义

Britishern.

Brit. /ˈbrɪtᵻʃə/, U.S. /ˈbrɪdɪʃər/
Origin: Formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: British adj., -er suffix1.
Etymology: < British adj. + -er suffix1, perhaps after foreigner n. Compare earlier Britainer n., Britoner n. 2.The word appears to have originated in North America, where traditionally the distinction was made between ‘British’ (rather than ‘English’) and ‘American’. E. A. Freeman in his Some Impressions U.S. (1883) suggests that at the time of the War of 1812, ‘English’ could be applied to both British and American people. He argues that ‘Briton’ is unsuitable as a noun corresponding to ‘British’, because of its association with the ancient Britons, and cites ‘Britisher’ as the preferable alternative. Compare:1883 E. A. Freeman Some Impressions U.S. iv. 29 I always told my American friends that I had rather be called a Britisher than an Englishman, if by calling me an Englishman they meant to imply that they were not Englishmen themselves.
Now North American and archaic.
A British subject; a native or inhabitant of Britain, esp. as distinguished from an American citizen.anti-, pro-Britisher: see the first element.
