Mineralogy.

Any of a group of minerals related to apatite, containing rare-earth elements (esp. cerium) and typically occurring as pale yellow to dark brown or black masses of prismatic crystals. Now frequently with a suffix indicating the predominant rare-earth element. The earliest identified of these minerals is britholite-(Ce), a silicate and phosphate of cerium and calcium, (Ce, Ca)₅(SiO₄, PO₄)₃(OH, F). Crystal system: hexagonal.

1899 C. Winther in Meddelelser om Grønland 24 195 The britholite crystals, which on average are one centimeter in length, are found with a fully developed crystal form in all these minerals.

1939 Min. Abstr. 7 395 X-ray photographs of britholite from Greenland give a unit cell a 9.61, c 7.02 Å.., corresponding to those of apatite and ellestadite.

2004 S. B. Castor & G. C. Ferdock Minerals of Nevada (Nevada Bureau Mines & Geol. Special Pub. 31) iv. 173/1 Britholite-(Y)... A rare mineral that is found in pegmatite; the tentative Nevada occurrence in rhyolite is unusual.
