Origin: Formed within English, by derivation; probably partly modelled on a French lexical item. Etymons: brick n.1, -et suffix1; brick n.1, -ette suffix.
Etymology: Partly < brick n.1 + -et suffix1, and partly < brick n.1 +-ette suffix, probably partly after French briquette small brick (1612), small block of compressed fuel (1769 or earlier), small brick-shaped object (1888 or earlier: see briquette n.). Compare later briquette n.
1. A small block of compressed coal dust or other combustible material used as fuel; esp. a typically pillow-shaped block of compressed fuel for household use, such as in a fireplace or barbecue. Cf. briquette n. 2.
