Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin adipson.
Etymology: < classical Latin adipson liquorice (Pliny) < Hellenistic Greek ἄδιψον liquorice, use as noun of neuter of ancient Greek ἄδιψος that quenches thirst (see adipsous adj.).
Obsolete. rare.
The root of the liquorice plant, or the juice of this, formerly believed to quench thirst; (also) any drink that quenches thirst.
