Origin: Formed within English, by compounding; modelled on a French lexical item. Etymons: adipo- comb. form, -cyte comb. form.
Etymology: < adipo- comb. form + -cyte comb. form, after French adipocyte (C. Janet 1906, in Comptes rendus hebd. de l'Acad. des Sci. 142 1095).
Zoology and Histology.
A type of connective tissue cell which is specialized for the synthesis and storage of fat (predominantly as triglyceride).A typical adipocyte comprises a large globule of triglyceride within a thin rim of cytoplasm in which the nucleus is located.
