Origin: Apparently formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: bottle n.3, bottle v.1, episode n.
Etymology: Apparently < either bottle n.3 (perhaps in e.g. ship in a bottle n. at ship n.1 Phrases 9) or bottle v.1 (perhaps in e.g. to bottle up : see bottle v.1 2) + episode n., so called with reference to their constrained nature. Compare earlier bottle show n. 2.
A television series episode produced using a minimal number of sets, actors, effects, etc., often with a single location and only the main cast members, typically to save money or time. Cf. bottle show n. 2.Bottle episodes are often intended to be produced inexpensively so that the budget for the series may be directed to other episodes with higher production costs.
