Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French adipocire.
Etymology: < French adipocire (A. F. Fourcroy 1791, in Ann. de chim. 8 68) < adipo- adipo- comb. form + cire wax (see cere n.); in form adipocere with remodelling of the second element after post-classical Latin cēra (see cere n.).Fourcroy later claimed to have coined the term as early as 1786, but this cannot be confirmed from printed sources. Compare:1816 A. F. Fourcroy in Dict. des Sci. Nat. I. 260 Adipocire. J'ai proposé le premier, il y a seize ans, en 1786, cette dénomination nouvelle et composée, pour nommer une substance grasse animale.
Medicine.
A greyish- or yellowish-white waxy or cheesy substance formed on dead bodies as part of the process of bacterial decomposition, esp. in damp, anaerobic conditions.
