Forms:

α. 1800s– bothan.

Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from Scottish Gaelic. Partly a borrowing from Irish. Etymons: Scottish Gaelic bothan; Irish bothán.
Etymology: < Scottish Gaelic bothan and Irish bothán (Early Irish bothán ; < both hut, cabin (see bothy n.) + -án , suffix forming diminutives). Compare earlier bothy n.The internal -th- is pronounced /h/ in both Irish and Scottish Gaelic (reflected by the β. forms and also some pronunciations of the α. forms); pronunciations with internal /ð/ or /θ/ are probably either spelling pronunciations or influenced by bothy n.
In Scotland and Ireland: a small hut or cottage, esp. in a remote area; (in later use) spec. (Scottish, esp. on the Island of Lewis) one used as an unlicensed drinking establishment. Cf. bothy n. 1.
