Origin: A borrowing from Italian. Etymons: Italian tivertino, tibertino.
Etymology: < Italian †tivertino (1568 or earlier; 1570 (in the passage translated in quot. 1663) or earlier as †tevertino ), variant of †tibertino (late 15th cent. as adjective in marmi tibertini , plural) < classical Latin Tīburtīnus Tiburtine adj., with reference to the region from which this rock originally comes. Compare earlier Tiburtine adj. and slightly later travertine n.Compare Middle French pierre tivertine (1556 or earlier; < Italian).
Obsolete.
A white or light-coloured concretionary limestone used in building, formed by the precipitation of calcium carbonate from springs, or from ground or surface water; = travertine n. More fully Tivertine stone.Chiefly in the context of Italian architecture.
