Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin Tītyre tū.
Etymology: < classical Latin Tītyre tū, the first words of Virgil's first eclogue, Tityre, tu patulae recubans sub tegmine fagi ‘You, Tityrus, reclining beneath a broad beech-canopy’ ( < Tītyre , vocative of Tītyrus , name of a shepherd (see tityrus n.) + , 2nd person pronoun: see thou pron.), adopted as a designation.
Now historical.
A member of a society of young aristocrats and gentry in the second quarter of the 17th century, who were renowned for their violent, lawless, and intimidating behaviour on the streets of London; (also) the society itself.
