Etymology: Apparently < the unattested Norn cognate of Faroese tytta , Norwegian (Nynorsk) tytte , both in the sense ‘girl, woman’ (of uncertain origin, perhaps originally a hypocoristic formation on the Scandinavian base of Old Icelandic systir sister n.; compare tittie n.¹), with the ending remodelled after -y suffix⁶.
