Origin: From a proper name, combined with an English element.; modelled on a German lexical item. Etymons: proper name Tithonus , -ian suffix.
Etymology: < the name of Tithonus (see tithonic adj.) + -ian suffix, after German tithonisch (A. Oppel 1865, in Zeitschr. der Deutsch. Geol. Ges. 42 535), so called with reference to this stage of the Jurassic leading into the ‘dawn’ of the Cretaceous. Compare classical Latin Tīthōnius of or relating to Tithonus.

Designating the uppermost stage of the Upper Jurassic; of or relating to this stage.The upper part of the Tithonian is broadly equivalent to the Portlandian in Britain.
