Etymology: < German Titanit sphene ( M. H. Klaproth Beiträge zur chemischen Kenntniss der Mineralkörper I. (1795) 251); < Titan titan n.² + -it -ite suffix¹); with remodelling after -ite suffix¹.In quot. 1796 at sense 1a, Kirwan applied the name titanite to rutile, apparently influenced by the recent discovery of titanium in that mineral by Klaproth. With sense 2 compare French titanite (1803).
