Etymology: Sanskrit, lit. ‘maker of a ford’, < tīrthá ford, passage + kará maker.
In the Jain religion: any one of the twenty-four founding prophets or Jinas, venerated as having successfully crossed the stream of time and having made a path for others to follow.
