Origin: A borrowing from Sanskrit. Etymons: Sanskrit tīrtha, tīrath.
Etymology: < Sanskrit tīrtha crossing-point (of a river, etc.), esp. as a ritual site (also with vernacular pronunciation tīrath). Compare later Tirthankara n.The forms tirth and teerth show attempts to render the vernacular pronunciation while at the same time using the transliteration conventions for nagari script.
Hinduism.
A place of pilgrimage, esp. one by a river or lake.
