Etymology: < brick n.1 + oil n.1 Compare earlier oil of bricks n. at brick n.1 and adj.1 Phrases 1.With sense 1 compare post-classical Latin oleum laterinum (16th cent. or earlier) and similar expressions containing classical Latin later brick (see laterite n.) or derivatives of this. A more common post-classical Latin word for the substance was oleum philosophorum (see oil of philosophers n. at philosopher n. Phrases 2 and compare quot. ?1575 for oil of bricks n. at brick n.1 and adj.1 Phrases 1).
Now rare.
1. A preparation typically made by distilling oil in which brick dust or hot bricks have been soaked, used medicinally for the treatment of a variety of diseases; = oil of bricks n. at brick n.1 and adj.1 Phrases 1. Also called oil of philosophers. Now historical.
