Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin adiantum.
Etymology: < classical Latin adiantum (Pliny) < Hellenistic Greek ἀδίαντον maidenhair, use as noun of neuter of ancient Greek ἀδίαντος unwetted < ἀ- a- prefix6 + διαντός capable of being wetted ( < διαίνειν to wet (probably related to διερός humid) + -τός , suffix forming verbal adjectives); so called on account of the way in which the surfaces of the fronds resist wetting. Compare Middle French adianthe (1546), Middle French, French adiantum (1546), adiante (1549). Compare earlier adianthus n. Compare also earlier maidenhair n.With black adiantum n. compare post-classical Latin adiantum nigrum (1542 or earlier), Hellenistic Greek ἀδίαντον τὸ μέλαν.
Any fern included or formerly included in the genus Adiantum (family Pteridaceae), comprising ferns with bright green, wedge-shape pinnules on slender black shining stems, and marginal sori, covered by distinct indusia; (in later use) esp. the maidenhair, A. capillus-veneris. Also (in form Adiantum): the genus itself. Cf. adianthus n.black adiantum n. Obsolete black spleenwort, Asplenium adiantum-nigrum (formerly called Adiantum nigrum).Valid publication of the genus name: Linnaeus Species plantarum (1753) II. 1094.
