1788 Gentleman's Mag. July 602/2 It is a custom with the Papists in some parts of the kingdom, upon the eve of All Souls, to illuminate some of their grounds, by bearing round them straw..kindled into a blaze. The ceremony..is called a Tinley; and the account vulgarly given of it..is, that it is meant emblematically to signify the lighting of souls out of Purgatory.
1825 W. Hone Every-day Bk. (1826) I. 1414 The ceremony is called a tinley, and the Romish opinion..is, that it represents an emblematical lighting of souls out of Purgatory.
